If you own a Type 3 you should know that, even though the Type 3 engine and other mechanicals are basically the same, there are times when having a Type 3 specific repair manual is very helpful. I am still on the lookout for other Type 3 manuals so if you know of any please let me know. |

The real thing. This is the manual that the VW dealerships had. Usually 2 volumes, but I have also seen most of the sections squeezed into one binder. You may find these in a variety of conditions as well as stages of completeness. VW sent out regular updates over the years so if you find one make sure it has updates through the period suitable for your car. |

The Clymer handbooks (above) have a writing style that the novice will appreciate. However, as you can see from the pictures, the cover changed over the years and the content changed as well. The Revised Edition (gray cover) is much more thorough with over 100 more pages than the other ones. |

The orange manuals above were produced by Henry Elfrink. I find these, along with the early Clymer manuals, to be the best buy for your money. Although neither one is still in print they seem to be fairly easy to find at swap meets and on the internet. Elfrink has an especially good carburator section with technical data pertinent to various modifications over the years. |

The Haynes manual is, I believe, the only manual that is still in print. Its not the best in the world but if its all you can find it will probably get the job done. It will be most useful to those whose cars are stock as some of the changes VW made over the years aren't covered. |

This is a really cool manual out of Australia. The guys from down under have a different way of explaining things that is real refreshing. They have developed some of their own illustrations and their descriptions are very good. There is also a troubleshooting section at the end of each chapter rather than just one for the whole book as is more common with the other manuals. |

This one is out of England. The text is fairly brief but there are a LOT of illustrations and multiple troubleshooting sections that make up for it. Its still not the best one of the lot but its pretty good. It has a really cool foldout in the back with a maintenance chart on one side and some really great maintenance tips on the back. |

Bentley put this one out but it isn't nearly as good as the "Big blue" VW manuals that Bentley is famous for reproducing. Its more like the Haynes or the late Clymer in content. |

Part of the 'Glovebox Series' from Peter Russek Publications in England. As the name implies, this is a small book that you can take with you on trips -- not super complete but should get you going again. |
I've found some more examples including one from Germany and one from Brazil -- coming soon. |
